Shalaniat is shallow reef and is only 4km away from the mainland. The reef is about 200m wide and roughly the same in length and shaped roughly like a boomerang. The reef is very sheltered from the wind and waves from the island Wadi Gemal, making it often an ideal overnight mooring spot.
Mooring is usually on the south side of the reef and this is also where the first dive is. You can drop off the rear of the diveboat and even moving further away from the reef, you are unlikely to exceed 18m to 20m. Most of the interesting features are near the reef wall itself and the depth here is around 10m. This wall is also often used as a night dive area.
The second and third dive route require a short RIB trip to the north side of the reef. A coral garden lies about 50m north of the main reef, the depth here is around 20m, making an ideal dive also for beginners. The two options are to stay at the coral garden and use the RIB to get back to the boat. Alternatively, heading south you will hit the main reef and with the reef on your left side you can swim along the reef wall. You will follow the reef wall until it turns south and then west where you will see your dive boat.
